 About the Piece:

his concerto was commissioned by Chinese percussionist Ge Chen and is inspired by the famous Chinese legend, The Legend of the White Snake. Instead of following the conventional structure of a concerto, composer Chin-Cheng Lin embraced Ge Chen’s concept of a “Marimba Song,” resulting in a five-section work, each with contrasting musical characters. The only exception is the final section, which recalls and reinterprets key elements from the first. Through the interplay between marimba and orchestra, the piece tells a timeless love story passed down for over a thousand years. The music shifts between delicate breezes and intense storms, capturing both the tender romance and dramatic turbulence of The Legend of the White Snake. As the melody rises, one can almost see the figures of Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen breaking through the chains of fate—revealing the steadfastness of love and the helplessness of destiny. While deeply rooted in the essence of this legendary tale, the work also incorporates tonal and film music elements. Each movement portrays a unique emotional world and atmosphere. The composer expressed: “In writing this piece, I hoped to give the performer greater freedom—to allow them to discover their own voice within the music, rather than be confined by rigid frameworks.” This makes the piece not only a collaboration between soloist and orchestra, but also an emotional connection shared between performer and audience. As in Lin’s previous works, I strongly believe that the marimba possesses expressive power in both tonal and atonal music. Even within a tonal framework, it demands the highest level of technique and interpretive sensitivity to bring out its full potential. The heart of this concerto lies in sharing—a silent language that conveys deep emotions and storytelling. I hope that listeners can find resonance within the music, join the performer in a journey of inner dialogue, and share in this sincere emotional experience.
